2016 leaver Suzie Slipper (née Walter) came back to inspire Textile students about studying and working in this field of work.

Suzie did an Art Foundation at Oxford Brookes, before studying Textiles at Falmouth University.

Now based in Cambridge, she has been commissioned to do an installation for a May Ball and is setting up a business making embroidered bridal accessories.

Her experience in making bridal wear is recent and personal; shortly after graduating last year Suzie got married, wearing a wedding dress she designed and made herself. She worked on it for six months, completing it on the morning of her wedding.

Suzie described the process of creating the lacy overdress and the inspiration behind its beautiful designs. Walking along the Pembrokeshire coastal path near her parents’ home, she photographed wild flowers, which she then sketched and fed into Photoshop and from there into a digital programme. Suzie printed the digital embroidery off and appliqued the pieces onto her lace overdress.

Her advice: don’t be afraid of making mistakes because you will learn from them.

Many thanks Suzie for your time and for showing us your work on your beautiful dress. Find her on Insta: SuzieSlipperDesign.
