Summer Concert is a Triumph

Music Summer Concert May 2010 1Last Friday the school’s musicians excelled themselves in the annual Summer Concert. “It is a slice of musical life at the school” said Director of Music,
Mr Tim Daniell, when welcoming the audience and introducing the evening.

There were many highlights – “almost too many to single out!” said one member of the audience. The orchestra began with Rossini’s overture William Tell and ended the evening with the Radio 4 UK Themes and a surprise item, music from Dr.Who. Other large groups included the Vivaldi Strings performing Capriol Suite, Scholars’ Wind with Debussy and an amusing and yet demanding Beethoven’s Fifth Bossa Nova! The Wind Band was truly splendid in performing music from eleven films called Hollywood Milestones.

Music for singers included Lloyd Webber’s duet Pie Jesu and Charlie Chaplin’s
Smile for singer and guitarist. The choir showed their talents by singing a motet in Latin followed by Vivaldi’s Domine Deus and then, in German, a trio from Mozart’s Magic Flute. Their finale was the invigorating version of The Rhythm of Life with piano duet. Other soloists included the ever popular Fantasia on Greensleeves for piano duet, demanding music for trumpet, a string trio by Crémont and a gorgeous violin solo – Chanson de Nuit by Elgar.

A really jazzy version of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy for piano soloist followed an ensemble featuring all the UVI Leavers in Gabriel’s Theme (The Mission) – all contributing to a foot-tapping second half! Music Summer Concert May 2010 3Music Summer Concert May 2010 2
