Fourteen year old Ellie Eden, a music scholar at Walthamstow Hall, has beaten stiff competition to become the Marlowe Young Musician of the Year on Tuesday 22nd September at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury.
Ellie, the youngest competitor, won this prestigious award performing Rossini’s Introduction, Theme and Variations, on her clarinet, accompanied by The Kent Concert Orchestra. She was presented with her prize by John Georgiadis, the competition’s Principle Adjudicator and renowned conductor, Music Director and former Leader of the Birmingham and London Symphony Orchestras.
The event was hosted by Classic FM presenter Jane Jones, who also introduced each of the finalists.
Ellie, has been learning the clarinet since the age of 8 when she began lessons with her teacher John Brightwell, whose daughters are also keen musicians at Walthamstow Hall. The promise that Ellie showed at this early age, whilst still at Walthamstow Hall Junior School, was recognised with the award of her music scholarship to the Senior School. Ellie is a member of the Kent Wind Orchestra and has attended master classes with Emma Johnson. In addition to clarinet Ellie also plays piano and saxophone.
Walthamstow Hall’s Director of Music, Mr Tim Daniell said; “We are all absolutely thrilled with this result, Ellie’s performance with the professional orchestra at the competition was truly outstanding.”
