Mulberry Development Plan

The Story so far …

the ship theatre under construction

The Ship Theatre under construction in 1989 and today

From 2003 to 2006 we spent time reviewing our immediate and future needs to make sure that we continue to give our pupils the facilities they need to reach their potential in Sport and the Arts as well as academically. Whilst we know that inspirational teaching is fundamental to achieving excellence, we also recognise that staff and girls are more likely to achieve their best when working in an optimum setting with up-to-date facilities.

In 2002/3 the Humanities, Languages and Careers Departments were able to move into attractive new rooms in the Erasmus Centre.

In 2004 the Senior School Science Block was refitted to provide six state-of-the-art laboratories, three preparation rooms and a dark room, all with the latest ICT equipment.

The new Junior School laboratory was started in the summer of 2005. At the same time, our infrastructure services on the Senior School site were upgraded in readiness for the next stages of our project, The Mulberry Development: redeveloping the Assembly Hall block, and the area of land beyond.

This phase involves the addition of new sports facilities, and improved provision for Drama, Music and Art, with a flexible and attractive public space for gatherings, assemblies, and performances. In addition, the Mathematics Department will benefit from a new suite of dedicated rooms.

The Significance of the Mulberry
The Mulberry Tree was planted on our present site when the school moved to Sevenoaks in 1882. It grew from a cutting taken from the tree which had flourished in the garden of the original house in Walthamstow where the school was founded in 1838.

As such the Mulberry is an important symbol of continuity, growth and development and a tangible link with our heritage. In 1988 a second mulberry was planted to mark the 150th anniversary of the school’s foundation.
