Welcome

A warm welcome awaits you at Walthamstow Hall Junior School
Our well-established school has a reputation for providing a high quality education for girls aged two and a half to 11, where each child’s potential is realised in the safe and happy environments of both the Pre-Prep and upper Junior parts of the school.

Walthamstow Hall Junior School

We recognise the individual, and our well-qualified teachers are experienced in bringing out the very best in each child, through pastoral care that is second to none, and excellent teaching by specialists in Science, French, Drama, Art & DT, Music and P.E. from Year 3. Teachers ensure that every contribution is valued. The small class sizes and broad curriculum provide an excellent start to your daughter’s education, an experience that will be an enjoyable part of her childhood.

Classrooms are bright, cheerful and well equipped and our facilities are first-rate, as you would expect from a top prep school. Girls make full use of our dedicated Music Centre, ICT suite, Library, Science Laboratory and Art & Craft rooms.

The school was once a private residence and we are pleased to have maintained the relaxed and happy atmosphere of a family home, where girls settle quickly and soon know their way around.

In our idyllic surrounding grounds girls have a wide choice of play areas where they can enjoy their leisure time, sports activities and extensive choice of extra-curricular clubs. A new indoor swimming pool will be completed in the next academic year at our Senior School site.

Girls can start in ‘Little Shipmates’ Nursery from the age of two and a half with parents given the choice of flexible sessions. We recommend at least two sessions (morning or afternoons) a week to help your daughter feel familiar with her surroundings but feel that you are the best judge of how many sessions would be right for her at this age. Full-time attendance in Reception begins in the September after her fourth birthday when the girls begin a varied curriculum with many familiar faces.

At this early stage especially we recognise the importance of communication between parents and school. Parents are welcome to come and talk to me or our Headmistress, Mrs Milner, and any of the teachers at any time.

I welcome parents to weekly coffee mornings every Thursday and am also available first thing every morning and after school for a quick word. I am happy to make appointments during the day for you if you would like a slightly longer, confidential meeting.

We welcome parents to form assemblies, parents' evenings, musical teas, plays, matches, as well as social gatherings, all with the aim of developing strong relationships between parents, staff and pupils.

Classes are usually no larger than 16 pupils with two forms in each year group. This ensures small classes for learning and a wide social circle across the year group. In the Pre-Prep girls enjoy the security of being taught by their form teacher with specialist teaching in swimming, P.E. and ballet. From Year 3 girls are taught by specialist subject teachers for Science, French, Music, Drama, P.E., Swimming and Art. From Year 5 girls are taught Study Skills to prepare them for independent study.

Some girls win scholarships to prestigious independent senior schools including our own. Progression to Senior School is based on tests and an interview in Year 6. For those who want to go onto a local grammar school our record in the Kent Eleven-plus is excellent. The majority of girls choose to take advantage of the opportunity to go through to our own Senior School with their friends. Some will choose other Senior Schools – the girls are well prepared for entrance examinations and all doors remain ‘open’.

When the time comes for the girls to leave the Junior School they are well-educated, confident and independent individuals, with well-established spiritual and moral values to stand them in good stead for the future.
