Young Sports Star 2015

21 January 2016

Many congratulations to Year 10 Kathleen Faes who was one of the big winners at the Sevenoaks Chronicle Sports Awards this week.

Kathleen won the 'Young Sports Star' award in recognition of her incredible 2015 in which she was unbeaten in cross country and athletics and won many county and national titles.

Speaking to The Sevenoaks Chronicle, Kathleen said, "I am really happy to win and it's a great honour to win an award like this, especially as there are other contestants who have done so well. These sports awards really encourage young people to keep trying and do well. It was a nice surprise for me to win. I think winning the cross country nationals was probably the best highlight for me. It was in London and the whole of Tonbridge Athletics Club were watching as well, so that was nice. Now I am focusing on more races and hopefully I will have further success. There are quite a lot of championships coming up."

The Sevenoaks Chronicle Sports Awards ceremony was held at Lingfield Park and Kathleen was presented with her award by Crystal Palace goalie Julian Speroni. Also attending the ceremony was Walthamstow Hall Year 11, Shivvy Azzopardi who, as part of the Sevenoaks Town U15 girls' football team, was runner-up in the Young Team of the Year Award.

Kathleen's award follows her latest win at the Kent Cross Country Championships, held at Fawkham, Brands Hatch on 9th January. Kathleen and fellow Walthamstow Hall runner Lizzie Miller were members of the winning Tonbridge Athletics team. Kathleen won the race a clear 1 minute 27 seconds ahead of her nearest rival and was followed by Year 9 Lizzie who finished in an impressive 5th place. In the U13 race Walthamstow Hall students also gave strong performances, Rosanna Allan finishing 5th and Megan Moore finishing 16th. In the U17 race Year 11 Genevieve Allan finished in a very creditable 9th position.
