Wally Pop

8 May 2017

It was a day of stark contrasts in the Main School Hall on Friday.  Utterly silent in the morning as Year 11 sat down to their first GCSE paper and by early evening transformed into a concert venue resonating with the confident and accomplished performances and hearty applause of the annual Wally Pop concert.

The scale, ambition and brilliance of Wally Pop grows every year and 2017 was no exception with 21 fantastic performances of current and classic pop songs chosen by students from Years 7 to 13.

‘Stand out moment’, followed ‘stand out moment’, in the fantastic show, orchestrated by singing teacher, Miss Leather.

Wally’s most experienced singers and musicians from Year 13 opened, closed and compered the show, which poignantly marked their last time performing at school. Very appropriately Suzie and Bea kicked off the evening with a quirky performance of Home. Bea kept hold of the mic and was then joined by fellow Upper Sixth Alice to introduce the amazing acts which followed. The programme included Year 12s Bella and Emily mashing up Shape of You and No Scrubs on the vibraphone, Year 12 Ana’s haunting vocals on West Coast, Year 8 Katie raising up the whole audience as she lent her beautiful soprano voice to You Raise Me Up, Year 7 Ruby giving an amazing delivery of Read All About It; Down House ensemble reviving their House Music winning arrangement of Amnesia and Year 12 Georgia playing and singing pieces she had written.

The show closed with Year 13 Emily belting out All the Stars, Bea and Alice combining a sense of humour and beautiful harmonies with their unique rendition of Reach for the stars and the Chamber Choir singing It must be love.
