Wally Pop Gallery 2019

The stage was set, the microphones were ready – it was time for the annual Wally Pop concert on Friday evening, where friends, parents and staff gathered in the Main Hall to hear students sing a ton of great pop songs.

Four students; Hebe, Isabel and Alessandra (Year 12) and Ruby (Year 9) performed songs they had written themselves, with song-writing teacher Mr Williams on his guitar to give further accompaniment where needed.

There was an encouraging number of performers from the younger years. Ruth, Jessica and Iona in Year 7 performed Cups from the film Pitch Perfect and Charlie, also in Year 7, carried off Whitney Houston’s torch song I Have Nothing with the confidence and flair of someone much older. Emily, another Year 7 performed Riptide on her own, with great confidence and clear diction. As our comperes for the night, Emma and Silvia said, we will be hearing a lot more from them in future.

This year, for the first time, the teachers grabbed some of the limelight for themselves. Their group The Manic Street Teachers performed another Whitney classic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, complete with dance routines. Top marks for effort! There was a full turnout from the men in the Physics Department with Mr Ledsham, Mr Hill and Dr Pender all giving it some – with Deputy Head Mr Hughes showing them the way.

Also in the varied line up was the Senior Chamber Choir who ended the first half of the evening with a beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. The full Senior Choir ended the evening with a harmonious rendition of One Direction’s The Story of My Life.

This is a charity event and the entrance fee has raised £1066 for this year’s School charity, A21, which campaigns to abolish slavery.

Many thanks to Visiting Music Teacher Miss Leather who masterminded the entire event.
