There But Not There

7 November 2018

It was an absolute privilege to welcome artist and photographer Martin Barraud to our Remembrance Day Prayers this morning.

Mr Barraud created There But Not There, an installation of Perspex soldiers for Penshurst Church in 2016, to remember the 51 men from the village who died in WW1.

The sight proved so moving, the installation has gone global.

His Tommy figures are sitting and standing in church pews, workplaces, public spaces and by local war memorials across the country to help us remember the fallen, as we approach the centenary commemoration of the end of the First World War this weekend.

Sales of the figures are supporting a range of charities which help people affected by conflict, and to educate the next generation.

After Prayers, Martin joined Miss Ferro and Grace, from Year 11, who laid a wreath at the foot of our own Tommy figure in the roundel.  Grace knitted many of the 100 remembrance poppies made in our school knitting group.
