(18th June 2016)

Huge congratulations to the Junior School Medley Relay team who this weekend competed amongst the top 24 schools in England in Sheffield. They shaved an incredible 7 seconds off their original qualification time to win the final and become national champions!

On Friday evening the 17th June our junior school medley relay team comprising of Maisy, Rachel, Elspeth and Charlotte  headed to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre Sheffield for the English Primary Schools’ Team Championships.

Further to their initial success in the Kent Championships when they won the Medium School’s Mixed Stroke Relay, they then went on to finish third in this event in the South East Divisional Championships and secured their place for the finals. Now the girls would face their biggest challenge yet and compete amongst the top 24 school teams in England.

After breakfast on Saturday morning the girls made their way to the pool for the water familiarisation session in preparation for the competition. Walthamstow Hall were in the first of three heats in this event and Maisy Sylow got the team off to a fantastic start on her backstroke followed by outstanding swims from Rachel Hall on breaststroke, Elspeth Watson on butterfly and Charlotte Carr on front crawl. Convincing winners of that heat with a huge personal best time all eyes were now firmly fixed on the remaining two heats realising that qualification for the final was a strong possibility. Within a few minutes it became apparent that not only had the girls qualified for the final but they had also posted the fastest time from the 24 schools competing in this event. This came as a bit of a surprise considering the team had come third in the same event at the South East Divisional Championships two months earlier when they secured national qualification. Now the girls would need to hold their nerve and prepare for the final.

As the events in the afternoon got underway the girls were given a final pep talk poolside before being called for their race. There was a tense few minutes whilst everyone who had come to support the girls waited with anticipation for the start. The atmosphere was unbelievable and once the race got underway it was evident that the girls where going to give another outstanding performance. As the race drew to a close Walthamstow hall were in the lead with several teams chasing for medals. But it was to be Walthamstow Hall who got to the wall first to become National Champions and gold medallists in this event.

Huge congratulations to all the girls for an amazing performance and a truly memorable day for many years to come.

A special thank you to Mrs Alison Carr who assisted poolside and all the parents, grandparents and siblings who came along to watch and support the girls on the day. In addition thank you to Mrs Howlett and the PE staff for their support and encouragement throughout three rounds of competition.

Well done to an outstanding Walthamstow Hall Team.
