Poetry Please

3 December 2015

On 1st December Year 10 students took part in the first stage of the national poetry recital competition Poetry by Heart.

Year 10 - 13 students from schools across the country are taking part in the competition, which is spearheaded by former poet Laureate Andrew Motion.

For this initial round, held in school, each student had to learn by heart and recite two poems from a set anthology: one from a pre-1914 selection and one from a post-1914 selection.

A panel of 4 judges assessed the recitals on the criteria of understanding, accuracy, performance and voice and chose Alexandra Bache as their winner for her recitals of  Love by George Herbert and Wind by Ted Hughes. Alexandra will now go forward to the county level competition at the Gulbenkian Theatre at the University of Canterbury Christchurch on 1st February.
