Peak learning

10 October 2018

Year 13 chemists had a colourful weekend in the Peak District, expanding their knowledge of Transition Metal Chemistry.

The field trip saw them hiking to collect rock samples and carrying out chemical tests on them to identify different metal ions in each one.

They went down Ecton Copper Mine to learn about the conditions men, women and children would have worked in when it was the most valuable copper mine in Europe, in the 1700s.

They also visited the splendid Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, where many of the valuable Ecton ores are exhibited.

All this in a single field trip!
