Opening Night

22 June 2016

'Break a leg' (or a paw) to the cast of the Lower School play, Alan Bennett's adaptation of 'The Wind in the Willows', who have their opening night tonight. After a successful performance to the Junior School, and a matinee yesterday, the cast and back stage crew are feeling very well prepared.

With a 53 strong cast from Years 7, 8 and 9, 5 band members providing live musical accompaniment and a back stage student crew of 26 this really is a large scale, slick production of Bennett's play which was first performed at the National Theatre in 1990 when it was directed by Nicholas Hytner and starred, amongst others, Richard Briers and Griff Rhys Jones.

Alan Bennett himself described the play as 'quite a formidable undertaking' which 'presents many problems to be solved' but the Drama department love a challenge and cast and crew have relished taking on the almost totally male roles, finding creative solutions to the number of vehicles needed on stage and keeping the production racing forward at all times. Director Amanda Phillips says, 'We have had lots of fun en route and we hope we can share some of that fun with you as we take you with us on our journey down the river.'
