New Sports Centre Opened

The new Senior School Sports Centre was opened on 17th September in a special ceremony attended by all Senior School students.

The Centre was declared open by Mr Ian Philip, the former Chair of the Walthamstow Hall Governing body, who oversaw this building project. Mr Philip was assisted by six Walthamstow Hall sportswomen each of whom has represented their sport at a national level:

Tara Daly (Year 13), holder of an Advanced Apprenticeship for England Hockey 2015

Alexandra Drewe (Year 13), member of the England World Cup lacrosse team in 2015 and one of the highest goal scorers at the 2015 U19 Lacrosse World Cup.

Kathleen Faes (Year 10), British U15 Cross Country Champion 2015, English Schools' National U15 1500m Champion 2015, English U15 Cross Country Champion 2015, English Schools' U15 Cross Country Champion 2015 and holder of the U15 British Road mile record 2015.

Zoë Naylor-Perrott (Year 8), ranked number 1 in the UK for the U12 50m freestyle in 2015 and Welsh Summer Open Champion for the U12 Backstroke in 2015.
 
Angharad Ward (2014 leaver), member of TEAM GB Curling team at the Youth Olympics 2012 and Great Britain University Curling team 2015.

The new Sports Centre adjoins the existing swimming pool complex (opened in 2008).

The new facilities comprise:

  • a 700 square meter Sports Hall, with 4 badminton courts and 1 full sized netball court, designed to provide maximum flexibility for a range of sports

  • an 80 square meter Fitness Studio with fully sprung floor

  • a 54 square meter, fully equipped Fitness Room

  • a large new teaching classroom

  • additional changing rooms

After its official opening the Sports Centre was christened by every student as they competed in the first House event of the new academic year, House Bench Ball.
