National Champions

30 April 2018

This is England's best U14 badminton team - Hannah, Sofia, Annabel, Rosie and Holly, led by fantastic coach Jo Muggeridge. They won the National Schools Championships yesterday.

More than six thousand schools enter this competition annually (across the age groups).  The Walthamstow Hall team showed total dominance throughout the qualifying rounds at district, county and regional levels, not even dropping a game until the regional final.

They maintained this standard of play into the Championship Finals, which were held at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.

In the first round, the Wally team beat both Queen Elizabeth School and St Michael's Church of England School 5-0. This ensured them a finish in the top three schools in England.

The students then faced the winners of the trophy for the previous two years: Arden School, whom they beat 5-0.

The final against Colchester High School was a little tougher, but the Wally team still won with a very convincing score of 4-1.

It's an absolutely stunning result and huge congratulations are due to the students involved.

Head of Sport Rachael Leggett praised the "outstanding coaching and the exceptional level of commitment" that coach Jo Muggeridge has given to developing badminton at the School.

She added "within three years of Jo starting to coach here, Wally are National Champions".

A fantastic achievement for everyone to be proud of.
