A wonderful Summer Concert in the Ship Theatre got the term off to a rousing start on Friday 6th May. The Orchestra, Wind Band, String Training Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Flute Choir and Vivaldi Strings group performed alongside soloists, including many from the Upper Sixth performing at school for the last time. The programme included performances of Bach, Mozart, Karl Jenkins, Sondheim, F J Naderman, Gershwin and John Williams. Speaking afterwards Mrs Milner thanked the Music Department, performers and crew for a 'superbly memorable Summer Concert'.

Lower Fifth (Year 10) musician Matilda Lloyd added to the Music Department's good news when she was awarded an especially high Distinction (137) in her Grade 8 trumpet examination this month. Her exceptional playing has also earnt her a place as one of the youngest players on the National Youth Wind Ensemble with whom she will be representing Britain on a tour that takes in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau during the summer.

Finally, we are delighted to announce a new position of responsibility at Walthamstow Hall, that of school Music Captain. The Music Captain role is being introduced as a reflection of the burgeoning part that music plays in school life. Each summer the Headmistress, in collaboration with the Director of Music and the Head of Sixth Form, will appoint a member of the outgoing Lower Sixth to this post. The Music Captain will work closely with the music department and will have a variety of responsibilities focussed on group music making throughout the school.

It is with great pleasure that we announce that our first Music Captain, for 2011/12, will be Jennifer Wheeler. Jennifer's appointment is in recognition of all that she has done for music throughout her time at Walthamstow Hall, both on stage and behind the scenes. Most recently Jennifer has gained a very competitive place as a flute player in the BromleyYouth Music Symphony Orchestra.

Many congratulations to Jennifer, Matilda and to all of our musicians who have played at such a high standard this term.
