English students explore Hardy country

As an important part of background research into their Pre-U Personal Investigations Upper Sixth English students travelled to Dorset this weekend to enhance their understanding of the importance of landscape in the novels of Thomas Hardy and John Fowles.

The students visited Lulworth Cove and walked the Jurassic coast to Durdle Door before travelling to Hardy's home, Max Gate, just outside Dorchester. Poetry readings, a lecture on Tess of the d'Urbervilles, a visit to Lyme Regis and a screening of The French Lieutenant's Woman were also included on the itinerary.
