Devised drama

7 March 2018

The fight for women's suffrage and the secrets of a 1920s New York dance club have been acted out in The Ship by Year 12 A Level Drama students this week.

Students are given the subject matter, then they have to devise a half hour play as part of their course work.  The performances contribute to their marks.

Behind Closed Doors told of the secrets of the struggling working classes in a 1920s New York dance club.  The five actors portrayed the power struggles between the girls and their boss who acts as their warden, as well as other emotional tangles with family and friends.

The Waiting Game gave us a glimpse of history as we followed the story of four suffragettes in their fight for the vote.  The actors' characters experience the harsh reality of prison life and the horrors of force-feeding and hunger strikes.

Both plays gave the audience a striking theatrical experience.
