Copper load of this

2 October 2017

It was a Chemistry field trip with history thrown in too, for Year 13 Chemists on their visit to Ecton Mine in the Peak District at the weekend.

In its eighteenth century heyday, Ecton was the largest copper mine in Europe.  It's now a Site of Special Scientific Interest above and below ground, and an educational trust to promote learning about geology, minerals and mineral extraction.

The girls wore hard hats to go down into the mine, collected and analysed rock samples and investigated the chemistry of copper and the transition metals.

On Sunday, they visited Chatsworth House, the home of the Dukes of Devonshire who owned Ecton Mine.
