China: Threat or Opportunity?

In the week that Prince William led the 'brand Britain' delegation to China, Sir Sebastian Wood KCMG, Britain's former Ambassador to China, delivered a wide-ranging exposition of China's current state of development as part of the Walthamstow Hall Sixth Form lecture programme.

The lecture, entitled, 'China: Threat or Opportunity' traced China's history from the prosperity of the Ming era, through to the republican revolution, civil war and Mao's victory and ensuing economic disaster. Sir Sebastian then explored the rise of Deng Xiaping and the new era of reform which has led to China's revival and re-emergence and the associated political and environmental issues which have arisen from it. Against this backdrop the lecture cited the opportunities which China's rise represents for Britain, for example to our creative industries and educational establishments.
