Chemists in medicine

It was full house in the Chemistry Department on Friday, when Sixth Form students and interested Year 11s came to listen to a talk on chemistry in medicine.

Senior Consultant for Intensive Care Medicine at University College Hospital, Dr John Goldstone, interviewed UCL PhD student Archie Wall about his route to becoming a post graduate chemist and the nature of his work.

Archie gave a fascinating description of his current research to improve the delivery of drugs to treat cancer and to reduce their side effects.

Dr Goldstone then gave a brief history of the development of painkillers and the impact that has made to medical treatment, before describing his role as consultant at University College Hospital.

The discussion covered some of the many roles open to chemists, ranging from producing carbon neutral methane in Kenya, through to making medicines on a large scale.
