Building design ideas

13 October 2017

Year 9's 3D Design class went to the Weald and Downland Museum on Wednesday to see the famous Downland Gridshell Building and have a go at making a model of one themselves.

A gridshell building has the shape and strength of a shell, but is made of a grid instead of a solid surface.  The museum's timber example was the first of its kind to be built in Britain and is made of slender oak laths.

The girls used the principles of tension and compression to build their own model, which will form the start of their architecture project.

They also saw a range of conservation projects in the museum's collection of historic buildings which date back to Anglo Saxon times.  A great day out.
