Alex Drewe has returned from the U19 World Cup in Edinburgh with a well-deserved bronze medal. This was one of England’s most successful U19 World Cup campaigns and not only did they bring home a medal for only the 2nd time since the tournament began, but they produced some scintillating performances that pushed the world leaders very close.

After early wins over Wales and Japan in their group games, England’s next matches against Canada, the new Gold medallists, and Australia, last time’s Silver medallists, were extremely close and both games were taken to nail-biting overtimes. Although both matches were to end with a golden goal in favour of their opponents, it took 5 periods of overtime for Australia to finally beat a determined and spirited England and it was this result that spurred on the English girls to take a revenge win over the Australians in the bronze medal match.

Leaving the USA and Canada to fight it out for the Gold and Silver, England dominated in their own ‘tournament final’ against Australia and showed their character to control the match and secure their bronze medal.

Alex played brilliantly throughout the tournament, improving with each match and her finest game was, without doubt, the bronze medal match, in which she scored 3 of England’s 10 goals. Her total of 15 points at the tournament (from 12 goals scored and 3 assists) placed her in the top third of the overall points scoretable – a very fine result for her first World Cup.

Well done to Alex on what is surely only the beginning of her international lacrosse career.
