175th Anniversary Services of Thanksgiving

14 October 2013

The Right Reverend Dr Brian Castle, Bishop of Tonbridge led two 175th Anniversary Services of Thanksgiving at St Nicholas' church this morning. The entire Senior School walked through the town to church (as the boarders did on Sundays in years gone by) to attend their service.

In his address Bishop Brian spoke of Walthamstow Hall's foundation as a home and school for the daughters of missionaries first in Walthamstow and later in Sevenoaks. He reflected on how the school's ethos of service to God and others, its adventurous spirit and ability to take risks and challenge conventional thinking were still relevant and very much in evidence at school today.

Readings were given by Mr Ian Philip, Chair of the Governing Body, Mrs Diane Wood, Head of the Junior School and Headmistress Mrs Milner. Former Headmistress Mrs Jackie Lang led the Prayers with the School Prayer, written by the school in her final year as Headmistress in celebration of the new millennium. Caroline Ayers, President of the Old Girls' Association read the prayer for the old girls and the Head Girls of the Junior and Senior Schools, Carys Newsome and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, read the prayers for the school, written by the Christian Union.

Upper Fifth students Alexandra Drewe and Verity Lloyd played pieces by Ludovico Einaldi, Zivkovic and Britten on the harp and marimba at the beginning of the services and choirs; Cantores, Wally Singers and the Senior School Chamber Choir sang Far Round the World (W Greatorex), For the Beauty of the Earth (Rutter) and Domine fili unigenite (Vivaldi).

A retiring collection was made for Plan UK's Because I am a Girl campaign.
