On entering Senior School every student is allocated to one of six school houses; Chartwell, Down, Knole, Montreal, Penshurst or Quebec. Sisters are allocated to the same House.
Each House has two Upper Sixth House Captains, elected by members of the House during the Summer Term of their Lower Sixth, who are responsible for organising House activities. Members of staff are also allocated to a House to lend support and help to their House Officials where appropriate. Their first jobs are to build and motivate their House teams for the summer tennis, rounder and athletics competitions and then to organise House Bonding Parties at the start of the Autumn Term to help welcome new Year 7s.
The vertical grouping of the House system gives many opportunities for the girls to develop inter-personal skills encouraging team work, and the ability to collaborate and work with others whilst also promoting the spirit of fair competition, leadership and the concern of the older for the younger girls.
House competitions like the Inter-House Performing Arts Festival and Inter-House Sporting competitions enable all House members to represent their House. House activities are one of the practical ways in which we ensure that all girls are included in teams and enjoy the experience of public performance.
Outside of the big Inter-House competitions House points are also awarded to students for when they demonstrate outstanding effort or service or make a special contribution to daily school life.
Each House is also responsible for preparing and producing school Prayers once a year and for raising money for their House charity during their designated fortnight.
