I’ve always found The Ship much less intimidating than other theatres to play and speak in due to its shape and warmth. I remember coming to see a play when I was in Year 6 and being amazed at the senior students’ talent.Rosemary Barker, Head Girl and Musician
Celebrating 175 Years of Walthamstow Hall
2013 is a landmark for Walthamstow Hall, marking 175 years since the school’s foundation in London as a school and home for the daughters of missionaries.
Much has happened since we first opened our doors in Walthamstow in 1838: the whole school moved to our current site in Sevenoaks in 1882, the Second World War saw part of the building bombed and our pupils evacuated to Shropshire; the Direct Grant system (very topically) made us Sevenoaks’ grammar school for a time. We have undergone a continual programme of growth building science blocks, swimming pools, libraries, the Sixth Form Centre and the Ship theatre amongst many other developments.
As the oldest girls’ school in Kent we have seen many changes, but one thing which remains a constant is the spirit of endeavour, adventure and enterprise which our students draw on every day. The respect that our students have for themselves and others, combined with the shared pride that we all take in our school makes Walthamstow Hall a strong and dynamic community and one which is very much enjoying celebrating its 175th birthday!
